Flo Rida - R.O.O.T.S.

For those have bee following my blog from the beginning you will know that Flo Rida was my first album review. So someplace in my heart I have a soft spot for him. Flo Rida has been one of the most experimental mainstream Hip-Hop artists. He shamelessly samples tons of classics and does it to a lot of downloads on iTunes.

Flo Rida is not known from his rapping as much as his catchy chorus'. This album is full of them. Some great examples are "Right Round", "Touch Me", "Sugar", "Gotta Get It (Dancer)" and "Jump". They all have some amazing chorus' which is really the genius of Flo Rida. The collaborator's on the album are Akon, Nelly Furtado, Ne-Yo, Ke$ha and Wyclef Jean.

For people who are looking for a Rap album your not going to get it here. Even when he rap's it's far from good. The best tracks on the album are all the tracks with guests. Flo Rida is not a rapper as he is a master collaborator. Sort of like Timbaland but he doesn't produce.

The album is all but salvaged by the collaborators. If not for them this would be a trashy album. But the amount of singles on the album are hard to ignore. I would say their are atleast 5 good singles. It's pretty amazing how this album comes out as a good addition to any iPod and any stereo system.

Overall: 73/100 (Best Tracks: Right Round, Sugar, Touch Me and Be On You)

Thunderheist - Thunderheist

I first heard this Montreal/Toronto duo on MTV Canada. Their performance was energetic and I have been following them since. The duo are a DJ (Grahm Zilla) and artist (Isis Salam). The way they make music is Grahm Zilla sends his beats to Isis and then she rap's or whatever she wants to do on the track. It's the magic of the Internet. Once I heard they were coming out with a debut I was excited. This album a dance-floor hit.

You never know what to expect from this album, it's a very mixed bag. But they seem to do all very well. "LBG (Little Booty Girl)" takes experimental side of Crystal Castles and puts some rapping on it to make it a stand out of the album. "Space Cowboy" makes R&B indie again and "Do the Right Thing" has some of the best production I have heard.

The faults of the album depends of the listener. Some may find this album not focused and all over the place. Some may find this album too experimental. Some tracks may seems like copies of The Cool Kids.

Thunderheist seem too have a good foundation for a few more albums. Their debut is something you have to hear and then decide. In my opinion this album is one the best Canadian releases in the past year.

Peter Bjorn and John - Living Thing

Everyone probably remembers these guys from that annoying and sort of enjoyable song "Young Folks" or the whistle song. But with a new album their showing their more than that. They do that with mixed results.

Peter Bjorn and John seem like masters of production. Their simple yet amazing production is nothing short of masterful. Nothing shows this off like their single "Nothing to Worry About". The delightful children chorus is pretty uplifting and the beat is crazy good. "Stay This Way" sounds like a mild version of Panda Bear. Which is not a bad thing.

But the album does have a few faults. After a few listens the album seems to always mesh and does not seem to have any surprises on the way. Which is a complex way of saying that it's boring. "4 Out of 5" seems like a horrible mistake, its horribly boring.

This album I find strips away the fun sound they had on their previous album "Writer's Block" with more mixed results. It's a step back for a band that can be so much more than on this album.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz

For someone to say this is a change for Karen O is an understatement. She now has rooted herself deeply into disco-experimental lane. But she hasn't lost her footing as one of the most charismatic artists out there.

It's Blitz see's the have a more well balanced path and it works like a charm. "Runaway" is one of the most assured pieces of work that they have done during their career. The lead single "Zero" is one of the most strangely uplifting tracks I have heard in quite a while. But these tracks do not take away from their edge. They still do what they want and they do it well.

One of the tracks that immediately caught my attention was "Skeletons". It has a hypnotic tone to it but it does not lose the groups personality. "Skeletons" is one of the best tracks of the year by a mile.

The only fault I could give to the album is it slows down the last 2 tracks and it does lose your attention. But after all the great tracks it may have been the right decision.

The album is one of the best of the year. It's not all out ballsy but it never sucks. Which is a big statement since the band always went a little overboard.

Overall: 87/100 (Best Tracks: Skeletons, Zero and Heads Will Roll)

My Thought of the Grammy's

I have thought forever that the Grammy's were just a marketing ploy to get your ass into the nearest record store. Which it is. But this year the Grammy's were surprisingly okay. That may not seem very enthusiastic but it hasn't been better in 5 years. I'm going to break down each section of the Grammy's.

Performances: This year didn't have any amazing performances in my opinion. Maybe Jennifer Hudson considering the circumstances. But other than that their weren't many great performances. Another okay performance was the so called "rap" pack (T.I., Jay-Z, Kanye West, Lil Wayne and M.I.A.). But M.I.A. just looked foolish on that stage. She was a distraction. I love M.I.A. . But she took away from the performance. The worst performances included Neil Diamond, Jonas Brothers/Stevie Wonder and Miley Cyrus/Taylor Swift. Neil Diamond just looked like a joke singing "Sweet Caroline". It's time to leave that song in the closet and never let it come out. Stevie Wonder and the Jonas Brothers were a mess. Stevie did his best with what he was given. But the Jonas Brothers had the nerve to forget the man's lyrics. Even I knew the lyrics and I hadn't listened to that song is years. The Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift performance would have been great. If Miley Cyrus didn't decide to sing off pitch the whole time. Taylor Swift was pretty good actually. That's all I'm going to talk about the performances.

Award Recipients: This year the Grammy committee mostly chose good recipients for the awards. My highlight of the night was Adele winning 'Best New Artist' and Robert Plant and Allison Krauss winning 'Album of the Year'. Frankly, Coldplay did not deserve to win the awards they did. I know that the Grammy committee thinks Coldplay is the safest option of the night. It's true that they are. But in my opinion they are no more than a crowd pleaser. Them winning 'Rock Album of the Year' was a big joke. At least they acknowledged they aren't real rockers.

Overall Grammy Score: 6/10 (It was a better than average year. More than ever this year great artists were recognized.)

Where is Sufjan Stevens?

I Can't Believe It!

Did you know that Flo Rida was #1 in 3 countries. He's back already. I mean the song is okay but people actually pay 99 cents for that track? I'm not trying to be mean but the track isn't that strong. I'm always confused on how the mass thinks. But I have to give him credit, he must be a hard worker. The guy is releasing 2 albums in one year.

I know right! It's pretty unbelievable. I don't even know how I stumbled upon this gem but I just couldn't resist to post it. I don't care how much criticism I get for liking her music. It's just so cute and it sounds like gummy bears dancing. Oh! Je t'aime Coeur de pirate!

Chester French

I was searching around the blogs and found a remix of Chester French. It's really awesome but I couldn't find it anywhere else. So I thought I would play you guys the original track. This is "She Loves Everybody".

By the way I love this band. Yeah it's a really old find but I thought I would introduce it to you for those who didn't know about them.

Lily Allen - It's Not Me, It's You

Lily Allen's previous CD (Alright, Still) was an ultra trendy ska affair. But with her new release she goes for the mainstream pop route. But she doesn't take away her artistic ability along the way. Which is a real talent for someone only 23. This album has only two mediocore tracks. Which is pretty good considering the genre she's dipping into, pop.

The best spots of the album come from Allen dumping on ex's which she does with expertly. The highlight of the album is "Not Fair" where she trash talks about an ex's ability in bed. It even incorporates Bluegrass for a cherry on top.

The worst part of the album is the last two tracks. Where it gets a little too boring. "Him" talks about God and if you think he cares about small things. It has a good melody and good intentions but it just rings false. The last track is just bad.

This album just puts Lily Allen on the map as not just another one album hit. This album has very good tracks which should live on for a long time. Can't wait for what's coming next from her.

Rating: 88/100 (Best Tracks: Not Fair, F**k You, I Could Say and Who'd Have Known)

K'Naan - Troubadour

The Somalian born rapper K'Naan has not received any major attention since the beginnings of his career. But with his latest release he hopes to crack the mainstream market. Unfortunately, him attempting this seems like his main focus.

I liked his previous releases, but this one seems too much like the mainstream music for me. I mean c'mon, he would have never had Adam Levine on an album before. I think he's just trying to sell some records.

The whole album is not horribly mainstream though, "Wavin' Flag" is a great uplifting track which is the highlight of the whole album.

Overall, the album has some good tracks. But the rest of the album just gets on my nerves. It's the type of record that you would only listen to once. Then it sits on the CD rack. It's too bad because this album could have been career defining.

Overall: 44/100 (Best Tracks: "Wavin' Flag" and "ABCs")

An Overlooked Album From 2008

I am enjoying very much the new album by Japanese artist Shugo Tokumaru. Some people have compared him to the Japanese Sufjan Stevens. But the language he uses set's him apart from the competition. Like all good foreign artists, you should hear something beautiful even though you don't know what they are saying. He acheives this.

Most Anticipated Release for Febuary

My most anticipated release is Lily Allen's upcoming album "It's Not Me It's You". From what I hear the album is pretty good. I heard the Itunes previews and I thought they were excellent. My favorites from what I head is "Everyone's At It', "I Could Say", "Who'd Have Known" and "Back To The Start". I am very hopeful that this album will be amazing. Her debut was also a treat. But this one seems like more of a delight.

Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavillion

It's not very often that in the month of January (in 1 week) two possible album of the year contenders come out. But it has happened. Antony and the Johnsons and Animal Collective's new album "Merriweather Post Pavillion".

This album is full of twirly production and anthemic sounds. The highlight out of all this is "Girls". It has wonderful production and sweet lyrics. It will be an instant favorite to people who listen to the album. One of the best songs so far this year.

Another thing that should be noted is that the sound is a little more hypnotic than usual. Almost like your in a hypnotist's office. Some pretty cool stuff.

Thr album cover is also pretty cool. I don't know the reasoning behind it. But I love the effect on the buyer.

Overall the album is a wonderful collection of songs that will please any music fan. Some will love it and some will appreciate the artistic merit of the album. But I love it.

Rating: 94/100 (Best Track[s]: Girls and Daily Routine)

Antony and the Johnsons - The Crying Light

Antony and the Johnsons are back after their astounding album "I Am A Bird Now". No suprise, they are still in perfect form. Antony still has amazing vocals and the simple production is amazing.

The album's highlight is "Another World" which Antony mourns the death of the world by humans. It is so simple yet so effective, like the rest of the album. But really does Antony even need complex production. His voice itself is an instrument.

Another theme throughout the album seems to be nature, highlighted in the track "One Dove". Although at points these songs do het a little carried away with the nature theme. They are pretty effective.

Overall this album is amazing. It's not as gender-bending as the previous album, yet it is still beautiful. If you don't buy this album you will be missing out on probably one of the albums of the year.

Rating: 83/100 (Best Track[s]: "Another World" and "Daylight and Sun")

Kelly Clarkson - My Life Would Suck Without You

After the major disappointment of her previous album. Kelly Clarkson is back to her poppy roots. She's doing it pretty well to. The chorus is top notch and Kelly seems to be into the bit beat and catchy lyrics. It's nice to see someone going back to where they began. Rather than trying to make a non-commercial album to make a point.

My Top 25 Song's of 2008

Sorry I never announced that I would be doing this list. But I think we all need a little surprise in our life. So it took me 2 weeks to come up with this list. I wanted to do a longer commentary section on this then my favorite albums. So it may take a bit longer to read. Go all the way down to go to number 50. Here it goes:

1. Hercules and Love Affair - Blind

It never really dawned on my how much I really loved this song. Until I revisited it this past month. It had everything that I loved. Antony, a great disco rhythm and some mind-blowing production. I think that this song is so hard to listen to the lyrics because of Antony's attention seeking voice. But the lyrics are wonderful to get yourself lost into. Hopefully they will release another album sometime soon. But this cut is a dance-floor killer.

2. Jay-Z featuring Santogold - Brooklyn We Go Hard

This song is so good because it had an amazing sample. Most of all a rapper that doesn't give a f*ck what you think of him. Jay-Z has always had good flow but this cut really shows off everything that Jay-Z could be. I also have to give props to the producers. They did a great job. Yes Brooklyn, you do go hard.

3. Erykah Badu - Amerykahn Promise

This track has been overlooked by too many critics. It reminds me of Diana Ross and the Supremes with more of a political side. I love the saxophones used in the track. It just had everything I wanted from a track this year. It was political and was sung beautifully.

4. Portishead - Hunter

The first time I heard this song I thought it was really off the wall. It had a heavy hip-hop influence and a (sort of) female falsetto. The pauses in the beats are genius. It showed that Portishead not only had great beats. But an awesome singer. To tell you the truth, I'm still scarred of the song.

5. Raphael Saadiq - Sure Hope You Mean It

It proved that the Motown R&B direction that Raphael Saadiq took was a great choice. Especially this track. It had funk, soul and Raphael seemed to really be digging it. I sure did to. It took much thought whether to have him at number 5. But it was a track that I couldn't get out of my head.

6. N.E.R.D. - Everyone Nose (All The Girls Standing In The Line For The Bathroom)

This will probably be unexpected from me. But the hook was so addictive. It didn't make much sense but the whole track was chaos. In a good way. If you had seen them live you would know that the performance was also chaos. It was good to get away from all the down-tempo stuff this year.

7. Adele - Melt My Heart to Stone

This was one of the track's on 19 that had no high production, no Mark Ronson just Adele and her voice. She had said in an interview that it had been hard to sing this song because of a breakup. You can hear that. Her voice trembles at points but it was so passionate.

8. Beyonce - Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)

"I could care less what you think" Beyonce says in her hit track. But no one had ever seen this side of her. But it refreshing from her slow tracks like "If I Were a Boy". Which let's face it, was whiny. But on this track she's confident and more of a woman's anthem then the trying-to-hard-to-be-a-woman's-anthem lyrics of "If I Were A Boy".

9. Sigur Ros - Gobbledigook

This was the first track off the album. It showed their new direction of the album. It was upbeat, beautiful and uplifting. As was most of the album. As much as I loved their older slow-burning stuff. I had a soft spot for their new direction. Especially this track.

10. Robyn - Handle Me

Her self titled album was the pop comeback of 2008. It was a departure from her Spice Girl singing in her debut. This track showed that she was all grown up, and not some record label push-over. It had a sexy side, confident side and so much more I can't put into words.

11. Dizzee Rascal featuring Calvin Harris & Chrome

No I'm not British. I just listen to a lot of BBC Radio 1 is all. They played this track tons of times. I loved it everytime I heard it. It hasn't made a ripple in North America. But it should. It has an amazing rapper (I love the accent) and a great hook.

12. Kanye West - Heartless

Although the album was a disappointment this track wasn't. It had a great hook and some great production. Although Kanye West's new direction wasn't welcomed with open arms. It works pretty well here. But please Kanye, go back to rapping.

13. Bon Iver - Skinny Love

I was going to put this track at number 1. But I just had so many other favorites. This track immediately struck a chord with me. The lyrics were beautiful and his falsetto vocals were a highlight for me. Who doesn't like this track.

14. Moby - Disco Lies

I was never really a fan of Moby (other than "We Are All Made of Stars"). But this track was a highlight from his album. By far. It had powerful vocals and killer production. Who hasn't heard this song in a club? I think this is Moby's best track ever.

15. Nas - Queens Get the Money

This cut has such a simple piano background. But it is the most effective track on the whole album. It brought me back to those "Illmatic" days. One of the best lines of the year:

"I'm over their heads like a bulimic on a sea-saw"

I don't even know what the hell that means. But it's pretty f*cking cool.

16. Santogold - Starstruck

The whole Santogold album was one of the most consistently great albums of the year. But this track which most don't acknowledge is one of the sickest tracks I've ever heard. The production is out of this world and c'mon it's Santogold. How could you not love it?

17. The Stills - Being Here

This is a great Canadian band that I heard of a few months ago. This song sounds like it belongs on MTV's The Hills or something. It's totally uplifting and I dig it. This band has a certain amount of coolness that is untouchable. (P.S.: I know I didn't include them on my best albums of 2008, but the album is so good.)

18. Solange - Sandcastle Disco

Who says Beyonce is the only talented one in the family is a liar. Beyonce's sister Solange is (maybe) is even better than her big sister. They sound very similar but Solange has a little more of a sense of what she's doing in the studio. Plus, the track is so catchy.

19. Sia - Day Too Soon

Although half the time you can't understand what this Australian singer is saying. It still sounds so beautiful. This track is kind of depressing (I feel like cutting myself depressing). But I think that it is at the same time such a beautiful track. (Check out the video!)

20. She & Him - Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?

How could you not like this cut? It's so darn cute and kind of rocky at the same time. Not a small achievement from their debut album. It sounds like it belongs on an Apple commercial or something. The one thing that I know about this track is it is so catchy.

21. T.I. - No Matter What

If their was an inspirational song this year. Nothing came close to T.I.'s talking about his shortcomings and his jail time. It was a surprise to me because whenever I think of T.I. I think of a hard gangsta. But apparently he has a soft spot in him. Awww!

22. The Ting Ting's - Shut Up and Let Me Go

I know it was featured on an Apple commercial. I don't care! This track is catchy and it has a killer British female lead singer. What else could you ask for? Maybe a donkey. But that's beside the point. The point is catchy is not always a bad thing.

23. Lights - Drive My Soul

Has anyone heard such a cute voice? Not me. But that is just what you could expect from the Canadian singer. This cut was the best from her EP released this year. I know it's kind of girly but the production is pretty good and for those who want an experience, see the video. Literally out of this world.

24. Lykke Li - Little Bit

If your in the indie scene and haven't heard this song, where have you been. Their is even a remix with Lil' Wayne. If Lil' Wayne is in the remix you know the song is crazy good. Not joking, that's how I find good music. Type in Lil' Wayne and see what you get. But seriously, this track is good.

25. The Kills - U.R.A. Fever

This track is crazy. The first time I heard it I thought I was going to have a bowel movement in my pants. The distortion is a great asset to the song. But to tell you the truth, this was the only good song from their album Midnight Boom.

New Look

I hope you enjoy the new look. I wanted to try something different to ring in the new year. I was getting tired of the burgundy to. So comment and tell me how you like it. I will probably change it once every 3 months or something. I get bored quickly.

My Expectations for 2009

I though that 2008 was mediocre in terms of music. Yes, their were some exceptional albums. But overall it was nothing like 2007. I think 2008 will be better. Looking at the schedule of upcoming albums I think it will be a better year. This year it seemed their were a lot of secluded and small sounding albums. Which is pretty interesting. But 2009 I believe will have a lot of bigger sounding albums (U2 etc.). I also think they will be albums of Hope because of Barack Obama.

and some others which were not mentioned...

So 2009 is starting to look up in my eyes. It is going to be interesting to see where the world of music is going to be. I am looking forward to spend it with you.

My Most Anticipated Release for January...

My most anticipated release for January is Antony and The Johnsons record "The Crying Light". His EP "Another World" was beautiful. Now I am so excited to see what come next from one of my favorite artists. If the EP is any indication how the album is gonna be. It will be one of my favorites in the decade.

(P.S.: How creepy is that album artwork. But I think it is so beautiful at the same time)

Britney Spears Bonus Tracks - Review

Most of you have already heard Britney Spears new album "Circus". But have you heard the bonus tracks? Some are even better than songs on the album. Here is a short review of the ones I found:

1. Quicksand: A beautiful song. The writers did a really good job with it. You can tell it was written by Lady GaGa. It should have replaced maybe "My Baby". 8.5/10

2. Trouble: It reminded me of the Madonna song "Get Together" immediately. I love how it has the trance thing. This is one of my favorites. Should have maybe replaced, it should have been added on. Not replacing anything. 9/10

3. Amnesia: I used to like it a lot. But now it's a little bit annoying. They made the right call by not putting it on. But it is pretty enjoyable though. 7.87/10

4. Phonography: This song is mediocre. The chorus is pretty good. But the rest is garbage. It should be replaced by another bonus track. 4/10

5. Rock Me In: I like this song. The chorus is pretty good. The production is futuristic. It was added on the deluxe edition. 8/10

6. Rock Boy: This track sounds like a bonus track. That's not a good thing. Thank god it was not included on anything. 3/10

7. Radar: It was on her previous album. But apparently it was revised. I can't hear the difference. But I still love it. 9/10

8. Candy From Strangers: It is disputed whether this is actually Britney Spears. I don't know, the voice sounds like her from "Blackout". But I can't see her even doing this song. But I do love the song. A lot. 9.5/10

Update: After I read up I found out that the song is by Myah Marie. But I still think the song is top notch.

This Week

This week in music is very lackluster. So I am not going to review any music. I think I will just add some special features. Like my favorite Christmas Music, My Expectations for Next Year in Music and so on. Really, this week sucks. What am I going to review? "Jizz in My Pants", thanks but no thanks. I may find something interesting but for now. I am not reviewing any album this week.

My Current Guilty Pleasures...

I did the exact same post a while back. But I liked how that post turned out so I'm doing it again. But revised... (no particular order)

1. Jonas Brother - Tonight

I went back to their album this past week. I loved this cut. I also started to grow a liking for the album. But shh... don't tell anyone.

2. Britney Spears - If U Seek Amy

Can you retrieve the secret in this song. Listen to the chorus carefully and tell me. Or I will tell you. I'll have the response at the bottom of this post. But getting back to the song, I thought her album was one of her best and I am especially fond of this track. So much so everyone around me tells me to stop playing it. But I can't stop.

3. Beyonce - Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)

It's been done to death on Youtube. By everyone from babies to dogs. But for a good reason. It's catchy and one of Beyonce's best tracks ever. Let's face it, we've all done this dance in the mirror. Right?

4. Katy Perry - Waking Up In Vegas

I know I said her album was one of the worst of the year. But that doesn't mean I can't like one track. I started to like this song from her live performance on "Later...With Jools Holland". So if you guys were wondering what track I liked from this album. This is it. (The performance is above)

5. Taylor Swift - Fifteen

Well it's finally here. It's been an average year in music. But their were a few gems. So this is what this list is for. You will disagree with most of my picks. But I would probably be the same to you. So enjoy the list. Don't take it as seriously if you I missed one of your favorites. (SCROLL DOWN TO GO TO 50)

#1 BON IVER - EMMA FOREVER AGO

This is such a beautiful album. This was the brightest spot this year. It was heartfelt, emotional and most of all lyrically breathtaking. It came from an unknown artist who I had never heard of. This album changed my perspective on music this year. If you do not have this album. Go buy it. Don't even think about it. Just do it. Trust me if it was not for this album. This year would be dim.
#2 HERCULES AND LOVE AFFAIR - HERCULES AND LOVE AFFAIR

This classic dance/disco record was the best in years. It was so abstractly put together that it could have easily failed. Yet it succeeded like I've ever seen a dance record. I think this will be the best dance record of the next decade.

#3 RA RA RIOT - THE RHUMB LINE

This record was the best debut of the year. It was like Vampire Weekend but better. It had a story and it was everything a debut should be. This was an album of maturity from such a young band.

#4 DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE - NARROW STAIRS

I did not immediately enjoy this album. It was a grower that's for sure. But once you listen to the lyrics you will find that this album has some of the best lyrics of the year. Each song was heart breaking to listen to. But it exuded hope.

#5 SANTOGOLD - SANTOGOLD

This was my most anticipated release of the year. It defiantly lived up to it. This album crossed genres in a matter of seconds. Which is not a easy thing to do. But she did it with ease. Like a veteran.

#6 B.B. KING - ONE KIND FAVOR

This was a return to his roots for B.B. King. It had heavy piano and most of all great guitar work from one of the best on the planet. Even his voice is still pretty top notch. I want to be B.B. King when I'm in my 80's.

#7 FLEET FOXES - FLEET FOXES

Talk about putting your influences on your sleeve. This is the closest you will get to The Beach Boys you will get. But this album did that without sounding old. It was something of epic proportions. Rather than another Beach Boys record.

#8 SIGUR ROS - Mð suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust

Even though I don't know what the hell their saying, I know it's something amazing. That's how you know this band is good. That's also why I love this album to pieces.

#9 ADELE - 19

This album was slow to catch on to America. But if you hadn't heard the song chasing pavements before it came out. What kind of indie hipster are you? The album was a mix of Jazz/R&B and it payed off.

#10 PORTISHEAD - THIRD

This was a comeback that no one had seen coming. This album was everything that Portishead should have been. It's a comeback that I want to stay back.

#11 BECK - MODERN GUILT

Who knew Beck had a taste for Psychodelic 70's music. Not me. But with master producer Danger Mouse, it came to be. The title track was one I couldn't stop listening to.

#12 LIL' WAYNE - THA CARTER III

This was the most anitcipated rap album for a reason. It's the best. Lil' Wayne spits like no other on this record. But does it (sorta) tastfully.

#13 ERYKAH BADU - NEW AMERYKAH: PART ONE (NEW WORLD)

This album gave me chills the first time I heard it. It was a commentary on everything that was happening this year. Erykah you've done it again.

#14 ROBYN - ROBYN

It seems Sweeden is the new Indie hotspot of the world. Especially for pop. This record had been celebrated in the gay community. But then was put to critical acclaim. It deserves all of it to.

#15 TV ON THE RADIO - DEAR SCIENCE

This album was actually a step down from their previous record. But it still came on top as a pretty good record. Although I was dissaponted it grew on me.

#16 SHEARWATER - ROOK

Besides Bon Iver, this album was one of the best crafted. It was so simple yet so complex in meaning. It really struck a cord with me.

#17 RAPHAEL SAADIQ - THE WAY I SEE IT

Classic R&B never gets old. "The Way I See It" was the best male R&B record of the year. It had touches of Marvin Gaye and Diana Ross. But he made it his own.

#18 CAT POWER - JUKEBOX

Cat Power came put with another covers album this year. But no one can do a cover album like Cat Power. She makes it her own. While still paying respect to the greats.

#19 MADONNA - HARD CANDY

I know I am going to get heck for this. But this was my guilty pleasure. It had top notch producers and Madonna has never been hotter. Who hasn't listened to "4 Minutes" under their blankets.

#20 VAMPIRE WEEKEND - VAMPIRE WEEKEND

This was the most anticipated debut for the music community. This band is what they call a blog 'sensation'. This record reminded me alot of Paul Simon's "Graceland". That's a big compliment.

#21 MGMT - ORACULAR SPECTACTULAR

MGMT was the hippest band this year. But the differnce between them and other 'hip' bands is they can actually play. This album had so many catchy songs that sometimes they just take control of my mind.

#22 SHE & HIM - VOLUME ONE

This was the cutest album of the year. By a mile. Mainly because the lead singer had little girl vocals. Yet the lyrics weren't as happy. But I still love it.

#23 HOT CHIP - MADE IN THE DARK

Hot Chip is ever growng in their quest to become the best electronic band. Their just about their with this record.

#24 THE COOL KIDS - THE BAKE SALE

I had said that this was going to be the rap album of the year. But it's still pretty good once I look back. It had great production, originalty and amazing rhymes.

#25 GNARLS BAKLEY - THE ODD COUPLE

I had to put this on my list because it had my favorite duo of all-time. So what if this wasn't their best album. I still enjoyed more than most albums.

#26 ESTELLE - SHINE

This record for most broguht back memories of Lauryn Hill. It wasn't as good as Lauryn Hill but it was represting all the female rapper this year.

#27 RANDY NEWMAN - HARPS AND ANGELS

He's become the butt of all jokes. But it doesn't mean he can't make a great album. He proves it with this album. His best in decades.

#28 BEAST - BEAST

I know many of you have never heard of this Canadian band. But give it a try. It's angry and sweet all at the same time.

#29 LYKKE LI - YOUTH NOVELS

She has a baby voice and I love that. Plus she made some of the catchiest albums of the year. By the way, she's sweedish.

#30 MY MORNING JACKET - EVIL URGES

I was dissapointed by this release. "Z" was a classic. Yet I still can't stop raving about it. Weird.

#31 JENNY LEWIS - ACID TOUNGUE

It was nice to see Jenny Lewis get away from Rilo Kiley and pursue her dream. Some country trang.

#32 OF MONTREAL - SKELETAL LAMPING

Kevin Barnes never seeses to amaze me. Hell, I couldn't go on stage in a dress. But with album he encourages it. I have no problem as long as he makes good music. Like this record.

#33 BE YOUR OWN PET - GET AKWARD

This is the type of punk record I like. A hot screaming woman and a great band. Sounds like my thing.

#34 BLITZEN TRAPPER - FURR

I first heard about this band on NPR. Ever since then I have been addicted. Just another reason to listen to NPR.

#35 NICK CAVE & THE BAD SEEDS - DIG!!!LAZARUS!!!DIG!!!

As if you weren't depressed enough this year. Bad ecomonmic times and anther Nick Cave album. End my misery now. Misery never felt so good though.

#36 Q-TIP - THE RENANSCENCE

It's been awhile since Q-Tip released an album and it was worth the wait.

#37 GIRL TALK - GIRL TALK

It never felt so fresh to rehash music from my childhood. Oh! How I miss those days.

#38 NAS - UNTITLED

Controversy aside, Nas has been Hip-Hop's shining spot. He doesn't let up here.

#39 THE ROOTS - RISING DOWN

I've never been a huge fan of The Roots. But this album changed my mind. Especially the political stuff.

#40 THE TING TINGS - WE STARTED NOTHING

See what an iPod commerical can do for you. One minute your in England and the next your on MTV. See kids miracles do come true.

#41 THE RAVEONETTES - LUST, LUST, LUST

I had never been interested in The Raveonettes before they were on some skeezy late night talk show. But I'm glad I did watch that late night talk show.

#42 BRITNEY SPEARS - CIRCUS

Yes I know, Britney Spears on the top albums! Believe it. Her album was so catchy I almost broke my hip dancining to "Womanizer".

#43 KANYE WEST - 808'S AND HEARTBREAK

Once again this another artist who stepped down his game this year. But anything Kanye does I enjoy.

#44 THE RACONTEURS - CONSOLERS OF THE LONELY

I will always prefer The White Stripes. But for now this is a good appetiser.

#45 NINE INCH NAILS - THE SLIP

Everyone loves this album. Do I have to say anything? No.

#46 THE BLACK KEYS - ATTACK AND RELEASE

Danger Mouse just turns some of the most unlikely bands into my new favorites. This is an example.

#47 THE PACK A.D. -FUNERAL MIXTAPE

If you are going through The White Stripes withdrawel. I have the answer. This band.

#48 COLDPLAY - VIVA LA VIDA

I know it's a little cheesy. But Coldplay will always fill my deep and empty piece of my heart.

#49 BEYONCE - I AM SASHA FIERCE

This album had some interesting cuts. I was reluctant. But check it out.

#50 AC/DC - BLACK ICE

I was expecting more. But it deserves where it is on my list.

I will be releasing my Top 50 Albums of 2008 in 2 days. So I thought I would post ‘The Worst’. These are the albums that should be avoided at all costs. Don't even consider buying or listening. It's a waste of life. I will list 10 most horrible albums from this year.

Soulja Boy Tell'Em - iSouljaBoyTellem (It just came out this week. If you hadn't heard, excuse this announcment It's hurt my ears.)
Shwayze - Shwayze (It's all trash)
The PussycatDolls - Dolls Domination (It's the Pussycat Dolls. It's a shoe-in.)
Mudvayne - The New Game (It's all noise to me)
Jason Mraz - We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things (I know I will get hated on by 14 girls. But it's just not good)
P!ink - Funhouse (I liked her music before. Now it's just bad)
Katy Perry - One of the Boys (It has 1 catchy song. All the rest is mediocore at best)
Nickelback - Dark Horse (The first single was OK. The rest of the album is trash)
Guns N' Roses - Chinese Democracy (The expectations were so high. It let most down.)

Fall Out Boy - Folie A Deux

It seems like Fall Out Boy went all out this year. Endorsing Barack Obama and playing a few concerts for him. But their new album is apart of it to. Their newest album 'Folie A Deux' is straight pop-punk-emo madness. It's mostly a hit, but some tracks are well, good.

The best tracks on the album are when they try a simple formula, great big chorus'. The rest will just fall into place. Examples of this are "I Don't Care", "America's Sweethearts" and "Coffee's for Loser's". These all are the best tracks on this pretty good album.

I have nothing bad to say about this album. Although at points the lyrics are a little bit childish. But this is a release that all the tracks are strong. Even though I say this, it's not an classic album. It's a great album. It's not only great, it is their best album yet.

Rating: 82/100 (A strong effort from a band still growing)

Universal Mind Control - Common

Common has been one of the most critically successful rap artist of the 21st century. His lyrics have always been at the forefront of his music. Second, was production. It seemed he had it all figured out. But with his newest album "Universal Mind Control", he's thrown a curve ball.

Universal Mind Control is full of club jams rather than social political commentary on his previous efforts. It's mostly about girls who bump and grind. Mind you some tracks on his other album's did this. But they did it tastefully. Not so explicit in his intention as on this album.

The production on the album is pretty good. Although after a while it may sound the same to the ears. He enlisted some top notch producers. So that should not surprise anyone.

Overall this is Common's weakest album yet. It doesn't have the lyrics that his previous albums had. I don't want to give up on Common yet. We all know really know what he is capable of. This is definitely not his potential.

Britney Spears - Blackout (Circus Celebration Review)

When Blackout had hit the public in 2007 everyone was wondering if Britney would pull it off. The answer was yes.

Britney made in my opinion, her strongest album in her career. "Gimme More" was a hit all over the world for good reason. It was dance oriented which hit big in Europe and in North America people listened well because it's Britney. Another great track is "Radar". Where Britney comes off as a maneater who is very picky about her men.

The weskest moment is "Perfect Lover". It's just is not up to par with the rest of the album. Even though the track was pretty good.

Rating: 81/100 (Radar, Piece of Me and Hot As Ice)

My Thoughts On The Top 50 Albums by Rolling Stone

So that time of year has come. Most magazine's will be releasing their top albums. But it seems no magazine does it like Rolling Stone. I always love to read their list. So here are my thoughts:

1. TV on the Radio: Dear Science (Great Album, but not a #1 album)

2. Bob Dylan: Tell Tale Signs — The Bootleg Series Vol. 8 (This collection is great...but I don't think a B-side album should be this high)

3. Lil Wayne: Tha Carter III (Best Rap Album of the Year)

4. My Morning Jacket: Evil Urges (I thought this album was just ok. They have done much better)

5. John Mellancamp : Life, Death, Love and Freedom (A great return!)

6. Santogold: Santogold (I think this album should be higher. It has everything to make a great album)

7. Coldplay: Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends (I liked some of the songs on this album. But overall it's very mediocre)

8. Beck: Modern Guilt (I think this should be a little higher. One of his best albums)

9. Metallica : Death Magnetic (Not the biggest fan of metal...so no comment)

10. Vampire Weekend: Vampire Weekend (A great debut, needs more teeth)

11. Fleet Foxes: Fleet Foxes (A definite throwback to the Beach Boys. Amazing! Should be higher)

12. Guns n' Roses: Chinese Democracy (I think this album was good. Not great)

13. Blitzen Trapper: Furr (A great debut. One of my favorites)

14.Ryan Adams and the Cardinals: Cardinology (I liked this album. I know people who liked this album much more than me)

15. The Black Keys: Attack & Release (The production is great. Maybe a touch too high)

16. Randy Newman: Harps and Angels (A classic voice)

17. B.B. King: One Kind Favor (A return to form. Classic)

18. Lucinda Williams: Little Honey (Not as good as last album. But still beter than most stuff)

19. Erykah Badu: New Amerykah: Part 1 (4th World War) (Should be higher. A great album. Production is top notch)

20. Kings of Leon: Only by the Night (This is too high. This album had a few good tracks)

21. Kaiser Chiefs: Off With Their Heads (I liked this album...but not as much as Rolling Stone)

22. Jackson Browne: Time the Conquerer (I think this album was brilliant, it had a little bit of everything)

23. Conor Oberst: Conor Oberst (This album was too quirky for me)

24. Girl Talk: Feed the Animals (One of the most original albums of the year)

25. The Magnetic Fields: Distortion (Liked this album. Like always very well done)

26. Mudcrutch: Mudcrutch (A very good album. I liked most of the album)

27. Brian Wilson: That Lucky Old Sun (Expecting a little more)

28. The Knux: Remind Me in Three Days… (Very original compared to most rap)

29. Bon Iver: For Emma, Forever Ago (Amazing album, very haunting. Should be higher)

30. Duffy: Rockferry (Sometimes she sounds whiny. But it was something new in Soul)

31. MGMT: Oracular Spectacular (Lots of great tracks. Some were not very good)

32. Jamey Johnson: The Lonesome Song (A little too much country for me...)

33. Ne-Yo: Year of the Gentleman (A little overated. But hes got some killer tracks)

34. Stephen Malkmus: Real Emotional Trash (Amazing album. Guitar is amazing)

35. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds: Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! (Should be higher. The lyrics are unbelievable)

36. The Hold Steady: Stay Positive (I don't know what to think about this album?)

37. Nine Inch Nails: The Slip (One of their best)

38. Ra Ra Riot: The Rhumb Line (An amazing band. An amazing CD. Should be higher)

39. Taylor Swift: Fearless (Not my thing)

40. Jonas Brothers: A Little Bit Longer (I liked some tracks. I think they belong somewhere here)

41. AC/DC: Black Ice (A dissapointment)

42. David Byrne and Brian Eno: Everything That Happens Will Happen Today (An ok album)

43. Nas: Untitled (Some meaningful tracks. Should be higher)

44. The Raconteurs: Consolers of the Lonely (Amazing guitar and an amazing CD)

45. Be Your Own Pet: Get Awkward (A great punk album)

46. The Academy Is…: Fast Times at Barrington High (My guilty pleasure)

47. Of Montreal: Skeletal Lamping (Was expecting more from this amazing band)

48. Raphael Saadiq: The Way I See It (I loved this album. Still do. Should be higher)

49. Hot Chip: Made in the Dark (This album keeps growing on me)

50. No Age: Nouns (Some tracks get on my nerves. But overall a great album)

So these were my thoughts on this years list. I think about 75% of the list should be somewhere else. So comment about the list...

The Fear - Lily Allen (Single)

Lily Allen's debut album "Alright, Still" was a majic mic of ska and catchy pop chorus'. So one must think that for her first single she would follow that same magic formula. But we're wrong.

Her first single (The Fear) is pure electro-pop to satisfy anyones craving for catchy pop. Her vocals on the track are fairly similar to her last album. But the track seems fresh rather than a stale sophmore album (which most people were expecting).

The only thing that brings the song down is the lyrics. Here's an example:

"Life’s about film stars and less about mothers
It’s all about fast cars and cussing each other "

But overall the song is a good start to a highly anticipated album...

Overall: 72/100

The Killers - Day & Age

It seems The Killers have a very short attention span. Every album they make they try to cover new ground. Hot Fuss was dance-rock, Sam's Town was a Bruce Springsteen tribute and now Day & Age which is pure electronic-pop album. The Las Vegas band was a huge hit with catchy songs that can make anyone dance. I mean anyone.

Once I had heard that they would be working with Stuart Price I was very excited to say the least. I had been a fan since Madonna's "Confessions" album. His swirly electronica style was a favorite of mine.

Once the first single had been released I thought it was a very good first single. It was typical Stuart Price style and it was a feast for the ears. I didn't quite understand the 'controversy' about the lyrics, but that's beside the point.

The album has a few high points but it's mostly low. Some of the high points are "Spaceman" and "Joy Ride" which are both lush and have that typical Killers sound. The low points are "I Can't Stay" and "The World We Live". Which both are some of their worst tracks.

In all, this album is not worth the buy if you are not a Killers fan. But if you are you will be left with wanting more from this band who has tons of potential.

Rating: 54/100 (Best Tracks: Spaceman and Human)

Britney Spears - Circus

Ever since Britney's split with boy toy Justin Timberlake it seems nothing has gone her way (divorce, custody and her unsuccessful album Blackout...). But she's back with a new album Circus.

Circus is a mix of many styles mixed into one. From the dance oriented first single "Womanizer" to the ballad oriented "Out from Under". Circus is a mixed bag of tricks from top-notch producers and a new revitalized Britney.

The best moments of the album come from the ballad "Out from Under" which is her best ballad since "Everytime". The best track is "If U Seek Amy". The song is an up-beat robotized track which could have belonged on her previous album Blackout. Another surprise on the album is the comeback of the outstanding track "Radar".

But Circus doesn't come with it's flaws. "My Baby" is the weakest track on the album. It's a track which Britney comes off as melodramatic and frankly whiny.

Overall this album is a good effort from Britney. It may not be as good as her previous album Blackout but, it's still pretty darn good.

Rating: 76/100 (Best Tracks: If U Seek Amy and Radar)

The Troubled Amy Winehouse

It's called baby making music for a reason. The sensual vocals, the heavy breathing all make R&B. But it's not only baby making music. It can be political like what Marvin Gaye did with "What's Going On" or Aretha Franklin track "Think". The versatility of R&B is never ending.

But the resurgence of R&B is desperately lacking that special feeling. The closest anyone has come being great is Amy Winehouse. Her personal life has been a tabloid favorite. But its her music that should be appreciated. Her song "Love Is A Losing Game" is lyrically magical. And "Back to Black" in my opinion was one of the best tracks of 2007.

The future for Amy Winehouse has been unclear for a while now. She is apparently is in a house surrounded by close friends and family trying to detox from drugs. But whatever the future holds for this diva, her footprint will be implanted in music history. As the fallen star or the greatest comeback in 00's.

The Killers - Human

The Killers are known to have quite the cocky attitude in the past. An example of this was their previous release Sam's Town. Which lead singer Brendan Flowers said was "one of the best albums of the past twenty years". But it was mediocre at best. So what do they do? Do what they did best in the past. Make synth-pop to crave any of our sweet tooth.

It was produced by master producer Stuart Price (Madonna, Seal...). Who is one of my favorite producers ever. So for me this is just a great song. It has one of my favorite guilty pleasures and favorite producer all wrapped up into one. Finally they've backed up that mouth of theirs.

(The only thing is...does he say "are we human or are we dancer/denser"? Which one is it. Just out of curiosity.)

Rating: 79/100 (The Killers best single since Mr. Brightside)

Kings of Leon - Only by the Night

When was the last time you heard a first single of an album to be "Sex On Fire"? Probably never. Well you have now. And just in case your wondering who it is. I have an answer. Kings of Leon. Hailed as Southern rockers who are edgy. This album doesn't really do anything for that.

I hate to say this but, on some songs they sound like Hinder. I know right "No Way!". But I think its kind of true. Its always a disappointment when a great first single turns into an album of the same old, same old.

Their are some great spots of the album like the first single ("Sex on Fire") and "Manhattan". But I just think this album is kind of average.

Rating: 57/100 (It just doesn't have enough "Umph")

Jenny Lewis - Acid Tongue

It seems Jenny Lewis can't get a break. She's been arguably the best songwriters of the 00's yet she never gets the attention she really deserves.

Her songwriting really comes out on her solo album "Acid Tongue". Especially the track "Pelican Bay" where an unconventional chorus surprisingly works. On several tracks she even reminds me of Loretta Lynn the way her vocals sound ("Acid Tongue"). But this doesn't take a way from her originality. Which really makes this album special.

The one negative thing about the album is some tracks sound the same. I would usually hate this but it's kind of charming.

Rating: 75/100 (A diamond in the rough)

Jack's Mannequin - The Glass Pasenger

It hasn't been a wasy road for lead singer of Jack's Mannequin (Andrew McMahon). He was diagnosed with ALL (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia) just after finished their debut album "Everything In Transit". Once I heard about all of the very positive reviews. I was very curious. And yes it is as good as some say.

It seems like the band has perfected the art of piano-rock. Especially catchy chorus' which is never a bad thing. Some of the album even sounds like Death Cab for Cutie. But even better.

Some may not like their type of music. But give it a chance. It really is something beautiful to hear. (Choice Cuts: "Spinning", "Crashin" and "American Love")

Rating: 90/100 (An album that tugs at you and never lets go)

It seems like a gimmick doesn't it? 'Year of the Gentleman'? Well with Ne-Yo's new album he says not!

Year of the Gentleman is full of pounding beats and loving lyrics. And its that and more.

I could not believe (at first) that Rolling Stone actually rated this album 4 out of 5. I thought it was another misstep by Rolling Stone. But its not.

This album puts all his other albums to shame. The lyrics, the production are all top notch. He even at times gives off a Michael Jackson vibe like the track "Nobody". So far its the love record of the of the year. Whatever that means. (Choice Cuts: Single, Closer, Miss Independent and Back to What You Know)

Rating: 78/100 (An album that completely came out of left field)

Being a Canadian, Kardinal Offishall was noticed a few years ago. Once I heard that his first single "Dangerous" was climbing the charts I was pretty excited. I thought the album was also going to be awesome.

It's not awesome but not bad. The beats are meh... and his lyrics are great. It just doesn't add up to what I thought was going to add up to.

I would reccomend this album for people who liked his first single and just plain likes his style.

Rating: 62/100 (It just mediocore...excepting a little more)

Jay-Z & T.I. "Swagga Like Us"

It seems like the perfect combination. An M.I.A. sample, arguably the best rappers. But yet it doesn't seem to live up to to it all. Its great to hear an M.I.A. sample.And it great to hear all these great rappers. But the flow is just average out of a song that could have been the single of the year.

Kimya Dawson - Alphabutt

Kimya Dawson has never really expressed interest in doing children's music. But her newest release "Alphabutt" never goes into adult territory. For those hoping to get a Kimya Dawson album like the previous will be dissapointed.

But some of songs bring out the kids in all of us like the track "Bobby-O". While others are kids only like the title track "Alphabutt".

For what its worth this album has done what its suppose to do. Be fun for kids.

Brian Wilson - That Lucky Old Sun

Brian Wilson hasn't really done much impact on the music industry since the masterpiece "Smile". His turbulent life has never really translated into his music. Maybe that is for the best. His style is laid back and not too serious. His life is definably serious.

But with his most recent release "That Lucky Old Sun" it touches his life in bits and pieces. An example is "Live Let Live/ That Lucky Old Sun (Reprise)". But that does not stop him from making nostalgic music with layered vocals to make any Beach Boys fan sing along.

For what its worth this is the strongest Brian Wilson solo album in a long time (besides Smile)...

Rating: 69/100 (It enjoyable and the results are great.)

LONDON (Reuters) - Fans of classical music and jazz are creative, pop lovers are hardworking and, despite the stereotypes, heavy metal listeners are gentle, creative types who are at ease with themselves.

So says Professor Adrian North of Scotland’s Heriot-Watt University who has been studying the links between people’s personalities and their choice of music.

"People often define their sense of identity through their musical taste, wearing particular clothes, going to certain pubs, and using certain types of slang," North said.

"It’s not surprising that personality should also be related to musical preference."

In what North said was the largest study ever conducted into individuals’ musical preference and character, researchers asked 36,518 people from around the world to rate how much they liked 104 different musical styles before taking a personality test.

"Researchers have been showing for decades that fans of rock and rap are rebellious, and that fans of opera are wealthy and well-educated," North said.

"But this is the first time that research has shown that personality links to liking for a wide range of musical styles."

The study concluded that jazz and classical music fans are creative with good self-esteem, although the former are much more outgoing whereas the latter .....continued below

Country and western fans were found to be hardworking and shy; rap fans are outgoing and indie lovers lack self-esteem and are not very gentle.

Those who like soul music can take heart as the research concluded they are creative, outgoing, gentle, at ease with themselves and have a high self-esteem.

And if you’ve ever wondered why people driving expensive sports cars often have music blaring from their vehicle, North could have an explanation.

Those who choose to listen to exciting, punchy music are more likely to be in a higher earning bracket, he says, while those who go for relaxing sounds tend to be lower down the pay scale.

Lady Gaga - The Fame

Its been a while since someone has been compared to Madonna the way Lady Gaga has been. Her dance infected pop music has won the hearts of many with her single "Just Dance". And her debut does the same.

Its has very much a electro/dance feel with a pop undertone. The album is fairly fluffy but very much enjoyable. It actually comes pretty close to Madonnas albums the way it has a contemporary feel but does not feel like its all been heard before. Heck theirs even a track that's like a modernization on Madonna material called "Brown Eyes". I agree that most of the music is pretty superficial ("Beautiful, Dirty, Rich") and not very meaningful but its just so enjoyable and, I can't help hum along.

Another very good part of the album is the production which is mainly handled by RedOne. It seems their styles mash well together and I believe it could be some of the best producing of the year for a pop album besides Madonnas (amazingly). Rating: 78/100 (I don't care if I lose all my credibility. I have to tell the truth and this is the truth. I love this album)

No you haven't gone onto teenbop.com I am reviewing that group that most of us remembered back in the day. You know the group by this song. It goes a little something like this: "Step by Step...". I don't even have to write the rest you know what I'm talking about.

So yes they have "comeback". It started with their first single "Summertime" which ironically was released in the summer. Now they have released an album. Which is pretty horrible. The production is mild and the group is not good. The guests really make the album (Lady GaGa, Ne-Yo...).

I can't even say that their is a song I like. It's all friendly and nothing that really stands out. So a little tip for NKOTB. Stay retired. (Choice Cuts: ....)

The Week That Was - The Week That Was

If you took a first glance at this album cover you would think "Oh, another emo band!". But your thoughts are wrong.

The Week That Was as an album is more than meets the eye. Its a concept album about an imaginary crime thriller. And to add to that...its pretty good.

It has arty moments ("A Disclaimer") and some rock moments ("Learn to Learn"). They sound like a youth brit group combined with a little Arcade Fire. They may not be as good as Arcade Fire buts its far from bad.

I didn't believe the hype for this album. Now that I have experienced it first hand. It's is as good as most say. (Choice Cut: "Learn to Learn")

Rating: 82/100 (Original and bad ass. What else do you want from an album?)

The Verve - Forth

Is it just me, or all the 90's British bands coming back. Like Oasis and The Verve. You probably remember The Verve from their hit single "Bittersweet Symphony". It was one of the big hit in the 90's and used in lots of teen dramas (a little late. Don't you think).

Now from nowhere they have come out the closet to make a Coldplay replication of an album that does not have much originality.

I'm just going to let you know that I was anticipating this album. For one I thought "hey maybe they will get better with time". But they did not.

The album to my ears just sounds like a band way past their prime trying to get back into the spotlight. But frankly they will have a better chance of being into my house nightlite. (Choice Cuts: Love Is Noise)

Rating: 23/100 (I know most will find that I am being hard on them. But it just is not worth the money in my opinion. And is very much a dissapointment)

Lykke Li - Youth Novels

How is it that Sweeden keeps popping out Indie Pop? To tell you the truth I never really payed attention to Sweeden as a music powerhouse. But since Robyn they have been on my radar. Now we have another Lykke Li.

Born in Stolkholm, Sweedem. She grew up with hippie parents who played in Jazz bands.

Her debut has been hyped by such publications such as Rolling Stone, Blender etc... And it seems it sort of deserves it. Her hit "Little Bit" is one of the highlights of the album. But the rest of the album seems like a group of songs just trying to match the quality of her hit. Which is not all bad. "Tonight" is another good song which sounds like a European pop star would have made.

I don't know if I would reccomend this album, but for pop fans they probably will like this album.
(Choice Cuts: "Little Bit", "Tonight" and "Dance, Dance, Dance")

Rating: 67/100 (Its a good album. But not great.)

Solange - Sol-Angel And The Hadley St. Dreams

Its usually a good thing coming into the music industry with a sibling who has previously reached a high amount of commercial success. But it seemed not to be so when Solange Knowles (sister of Beyonce) first album was released. It under-achieved and many were wondering if she was going to release another. She has. And it is much better than her debut.

If the one thing Solange has that her sister Beyonce does not it is that she has substance. Her music does not seemed to be packaged and wrapped with a bow on it. It seems more like raw talent.

In terms of their voices. It seems like their voices are exact replications of the other. They have that same sort of range and it sounds pretty good.

It seems that Solange has finally stepped out of her sister shadow and given it to us with love.

But its not all good in the world of Solange. The slow-jam moments just lag the albums progression and you might as well just skip those. (Choice Cuts: Sandcastle Disco, I Decided Pt.2 and Ode to Marvin)

Rating: 62/100 (A good album just too many slow tracks to make a 80% album)

Shwayze - Shwayze

I can't ever find in recent memory an artist/group that was on an MTV show that was actually good. This is no different with Rap/Acoustic/... Shwayze. Their lyrics consist of chessy L.A. love songs that only 12 year old boys would find somewhat good.

Their only actually average song is "Corona and Lime". It has a rather good chorus and lets face it's a summer hit and it sort of deserves it.

But no other lyric this year is this bad as on "Lazy Days" it goes a little something like this:

"...Walkin' through malibu not a thing to do/
Got a find a fine young little girl to screw..."

Need I say anymore... (Choice Cut: Corona and Lime)

Rating: 16/100 (Let's face it lyrics are horrible and the tune is not at all fresh)

Pink - So What (Single)

I am amazed that Pink has still has some sort of credibility. Her music over the years has deliberately tried to make Pop and Rock fans alike happy with her music.

Her first single from her upcoming album is no different. It has a wimpy/predictable 'riff' with a poppy chorus that just won't leave your head. I don't usually say people are posers but Pink I believe is one of the biggest.

I do appreciate some of her work like "Dear Mr. President" but other than that her music to me is garbage. If you want real pop listen to Robyn or rock listen to the other 1,000,000 musicians who make it better than her. I don't hate her, I just hate her music.

Rating: 21/100 (Garbage)

Ra Ra Riot - The Rhumb Line

Who ever thought of the group name Ra Ra Riot? Whoever did it is genius. This is the debut from Syracuse, New York band that has garnered crititical acclaim from such publications as Rolling Stone, The New York Times, Entertainment Weekly and many others.

This is an interesting release because their drummer had died from drowning in July 2007. But most of the album was cut previous to his tragic death. Their are some track names that are kind of foreshadowing his death like "Dying Is Fine" and "Ghost Under Rocks" since his body was found in a bay.

The sound of this album is interesting and fairly arty because of lots of violin that make them create an original sound. This band recalls in my mind Bedouin Soundclash without the Afro-Pop mixed with violin. Which makes this debut pretty interesting and fantastic. This album is more than an indie album. Its an album that represents life for others after death. ( Choice Cuts: "Each Year", "Can You Tell" and "Too Too Too Fast")

Rating: 91/100 (A brilliant debut!)

Kreesha Turner - Passion

Needless to say the Canadian music community has always brought up artists to be compared to their American counterparts. Recently Kreesha Turner an artist from Alberta, Canada has been compared to mostly Rihanna.

That comparison between the two has just been broken with her debut "Passion". It has a mix of slow jams and songs that just want to make you dance. But when I listen to the album it seems she is at her best when she does more up-tempo tracks rather than the more slower tracks. (Choice Cuts: Chains of Love and Don't Call Me Baby)

The Pack A.D. - Funeral Mixtape

It seems like we have a White Stripes clone band on our hands. Everything about this group screams White Stripes. The loud drums, the quirky vocals and heck lets just throw it out there they have 2 members.

The greatest example of their WS sound is the track "Don't Have To Like You" where the 3 examples I listed are at their most boldest.

But thankfully for them I love the White Stripes and this to me is to keep me sane until (hopefully) their next album.

They are their own band and show it on some great tracks like "Worried" and "Underground". But the best cut of the album is "Dannemora Blues". Where the lead singer almost sounds like Cat Power with a little more of a rocker kick and a little less breathy vocals.

Overall this album is above mediocre but a little less from great. If you like the White Stripes say hello to White Stripes "J.R."

Rating: 71/100 (Give it a chance and it could be a favorite record of the year...)

Jonas Brothers - A Little Bit Longer

The mass hysteria that follows the Jonas Brothers has been compared to The Beatles and other mega groups of that time. But most of the time that hysteria was justified. But it seems the Jonas Brothers mega-fame has been contributed to one thing their looks. Until now.

Their newest release is a big step up from their previous record "Jonas Brothers". But it still seems how do you say...dull. After the first few songs on the album grasp your attention because it feels like something new. But as the record progresses it get more and more dull. Another problem with the record is that Nick Jonas' voice still needs developing because it still sounds whinny.

Although their are some great cuts like "A Little Bit Longer", "Tonight", "Burnin' Up" and "Lovebug". But it seems that they either hit it out of the park or just strike out... Their are no in between when it come to the Jonas Brothers. But I would not give up on them yet. They show some promise as a Power-Pop group with their catchy hooks. But for now its just mediocre.

Rating: 65/100 (They rock out sometimes and are good sometimes...)

Divine Brown - The Love Chronicles

Most of Canada has already been introduced to Divine Brown. Through her track "Old School Love". But it seemed her debut had so much potential but was sort of a disappointment. But this album is 100% better than her debut! Her voice is more sultry and you are in no short stalk of those high notes (because of her 5 octave voice). So in short this is everything a R&B record should be. But its not only R&B on this record it has tons of Funk that is reminiscent of Erykah Badu. Its a shame that this album will probably not be a commercial success like other great albums. But even if she does not sell alot I don't think this is the last time you will hear from her.

Rating: 87/100 (This record and the Erykah Badu record is R&B like no other this year)

My Current Guilty Pleasures...

Everyone has them. That poppy jam that comes on Top 40 radio that you can't help sing-a-long to. But hide like your unwanted child. I admit it, I listen to Top 40 radio occasionally. I listen sometimes painfully but sometimes singing along like never before. So here is the list of my favorite guilty pleasures:

1. Kid Rock "All Summer Long"

It's practically impossible to say you like this song without sounding like a dork. Another reason its a guilty pleasure is it's Kid Rock. But I can't help but sing along with this rip-off of "Sweet Home Alabama".

2. Jonas Brothers "Burnin' Up"

It's a typical tween anthem from the Disney Corp. . It's as catchy as herpes and so darn cute you just have to have some sort of liking toward it. Even those you deny ever hearing of it. (I will reviewing their sophomore album "A Little Bit Longer" this week)

3. Duffy "Mercy"

I know she has received some critical acclaim but as a straight male. How do you tell your friends you listen to Duffy? Never thats how. I knew about her since she made it big in the UK but ever since shes made it onto North American radio I've been an even bigger Duffy fan. So much so that I went to a festival she was at and pushed and shoved 13 girls out of the way to get a close up.

4. Estelle feat. Kanye West "American Boy"

Like Duffy she has been received well by critics but still... Have you heard that beat!? It's so poppy and infectious that when you hear it around your friends it's like going into withdrawals from not tapping your feet and dancing. (I thought her album was great...not as poppy as this cut)

5. Madonna "Give It 2 Me"

I am one of the biggest closeted Madonna fans ever. Just this year on my blog I came out and said it "I love Madonna's album Hard Candy". It's kind of embarrassing that I think it is one of the best albums of the year (I know, right!) . This cut from her album has been a hit up here in Canada and its dance feel recalls her previous album "Confessions On The Dancefloor". If I were to give one reason why it is a guilty pleasure is...its Madonna!

Re: Has Rolling Stone Lost Its Touch

(Here is the article in which I am making a response to)

Once I had read this article needless to say I reflected on this. I am a loyal subscriber to Rolling Stone magazine and anxiously await every 2 weeks for the sound of my mailbox opening and closing and sometimes looking for the mailman down the street like a 7 year old child. Here and their I am pleasantly surprised by their reporting and reviews. But all in all only around 20% of their articles/reviews are even worth reading. Which is pretty disappointing. Another complaint about the magazine in the past few years is it has become advertisement heavy rather than article heavy. I actually counted my latest issue and how many ads their actually are and I came up with 58 ads in a magazine with 111 pages. That is more than 1 ad for every 2 pages! I also agree that lately Rolling Stone has been off with several reviews. Such as:

1. N.E.R.D. 'Seeing Sounds' (underrated)
2. Amy Winehouse 'Back to Black' (underrated)
3. Bruce Springsteen 'Magic' (yeah it was good...but 5 stars!)
4. Adele '19' (underrated)

Yeah I have been disappointed with the magazine lately. But I don't think it's lost all its credibility. In my opinion I still think that it is a landmark for a musician to be on the cover. So I won't unsubscribe from the magazine. If it does lose all it credibility I will. So be careful Rolling Stone your going down a slippery slope...

Scars On Broadway - Scars On Broadway

What do you get when you combine 2 SOTD members. You would think SOTD but what you really get is Scars On Broadway. The difference you may ask? It's a little more 'classic' rock influenced than SOTD. Well thats how lead singer Daron Malakian explains it. But you don't really hear it in my opinion. It's typically loud and metal driven like their previous band. So when you purchase this album you basically are buying a SOTD album. So SOTD fans rejoice a SOTD record has been released. For those who are not fans cover your ears...

Rick Springfield - Venus In Overdrive

Why! Why must Rick Springfield reappear! I thought the nail was in the coffin. But I guess he's found his way out. He had a string of media appearances this year (most notably Oprah) and he's released his 'comeback' album "Venus In Overdrive". With this album it seems that Springfield is trying to touch a younger audiences. Like the track "I'll Miss That Someday" and "What's Victoria's Secret?". Which sound like they belong on some sappy MTV 'reality' show like The Hills or Laguna Beach. It's a smart move because whatever he does his older audiences will follow him. So it obvious that he will try to reach a new audience. But as a CD goes it doesn't have much staying power.

Who Says Covers Have To Suck

Anyone who pays attention to the indie scene already knows Cat Power. But for those of you who don't you may remember her from the hit movie 'Juno'. Her rendition of Phil Phillips 'Sea Of Love' was a highlight of the soundtracks innocence. Her most recent album 'Jukebox' is a covers record and no one does it quite as good as her these days.

She has also gained notoriety for her performances. If you have seen a Cat Power concert you know it's unpredictable. She will sometimes stop and even get off stage. She states that this was because of her stage fright and her battle with alcoholism. But when she's on her game. It's a beautiful sight. I recently saw her in concert and it was like you were in another world. It know it sounds cheesy but it brought you places... I don't do concert reviews. But I have to give respect where it is deserved.

I can't say I am the most qualified to review a country album. To be frank my favorite country singer is Loretta Lynn (who doesn't). But Sugarland caught my attention when I saw listening to the radio when their hit 'All I Want To Do' came on. I thought it was catchy and it could of had something their. It does. But unfortunately the album just does not have it. It's country and thats all fine and dandy but its just missing something. But like I said before I don't really like country that much so if you like country buy the album if you don't BEWARE!

Dr. Dog - Fate

It's a beautiful thing when Dr. Dog releases an album. They have quietly recorded 3 great albums and their back again. Their newest release Fate. For me Dr. Dog is a little too pretty at times. But they are at their best when it borders the line of being pretty and sappy. An example of that sort of magic is the track 'The Breeze'. The harmony and everything about the track is beautiful. Yet they do not go over that line of being sappy. Some call this album a throwback to the good days. In a way you could say that is true. But it never feels out of date. It always sounds like the present. The only flaw I could think of about the album is it has no flaws. It sounds weird right. But it's all a little but too much of perfection for my liking. But for what it's worth this is the album of the week.

Rating: 79/100 (It's a good release. It may not be their best but you can't say it's not good.)

Soul Food...

No it's not what you think. I am not writing about chicken and jambalaya. I'm talking about an artist that will meet your soul craving. Her name: Sharon Jones. I purchased her album sometime last year. I listened it to it twice. And from then on I left it to collect dust on my music shelf. Until this year. I was cleaning up my CD collection (placing them in order). When I saw her latest release '100 Days, 100 Nights' in my collection I didn't know what to do. I was way over my CD limit (about 100 CD's over!). I was throwing some away. So before bringing it to the curb I listened to it once more just to make sure of my decision. I placed it in my record player and listened to the sweet old soul. Before I could blink it was over. I was lost in her beautiful voice and the instrumental background. I had made my decision. Of course it stayed. When I started to reflect on the album I realized her she made me have feelings I had never felt before all at once. Hurt, guilt, anger and so much more. So do yourself a favor pick up her CD '100 Days, 100 Nights'.

Brendan Canning - Soemthing For All of Us,,,

You probably know Brendan Canning from Broken Social Scene. A Canadian group of so many members I don't even know half of their names. Trying to make a name for himself as a solo artist (who isn't these days) he releases a Alternative/Rock album for everyone. Some of the tracks are duds like 'Take Up, Look Up'. But their other tracks that may catch peoples attention. Such as 'Hit The Wall' which seems like a track you may hear on Radiohead's 'In Rainbows'. But other than a few tracks this album is kind of lackluster. Fans of Broken Social Scene will probably enjoy this record. But for those who do not know about Broken Social Scene you will be most likely bored and drowsy. It's a good effort but a little undercooked.

Overall: 57/100 (Forgettable. Although their are a few tracks that should be downloaded'

CCS - Donkey

It's amazing what an Ipod ad could do for your career. The best example of this is Feist. But another group featured was CSS. They were on the ad for the Ipod Touch. They made a minor splash with their debut 'Cansei de Ser Sexy'. They traditionally had a more unpolished sound. But their new disc 'Donkey' sounds more polished than usual. It's has all up-tempo tracks and is pretty darn catchy and danceable. But beware. This is not an album that will likely be on repeat. Myself personally would not play this record more than once or twice. I don't know why. But this album may just be an attention grab than anything else. Don't get me wrong this album is not horrible. But even worse (in my mind) mediocre.

Rating: 59/100 (It gets you dancing but thats about it)

Miley Cyrus - Breakout

Could it be that a Disney star are actually make a good album? Well, Miley Cyrus is proof that it can be possible in the future. It isn't bad but it's not good. Some good songs include the single '7 Things' and 'Breakout'. But not all is good in Miley world. She absolutely makes a laughable cover of 'Girls Just Wanna Have Fun'. But overall it is proof that it is possible to make a good album from the Disney label in the near future. It's not great like I said but it's a start.

Rating: 52/100 (You got to give her props for trying to break the Disney mold but its still bad)

Black Kids - Partie Traumatic

I while back I featured this Jacksonville, Florida buzz band. Ever since then I have been anticipating their debut. And I am disappointed. It just all sounds too familiar and not as fresh as I wanted it to turn out. The two best track are 'I'm Not Gonna...' and 'Hurricane Jane'. Don't get me wrong the album is as catchy as a forest fire and it is not a I was expecting better.

Overall: 58/100 (Meh...)

I Don't Know How This One Went Over My Head...

This one was never on my radar. But after going around the net I just found one of my favorite albums this year. It called 'LP3' by Ratatat. It ambient electronic at its best. I never made a rating so here it is.

Rating: Lyrics: ??? (Their are none)

Tunefulness: 48/50 (it just sounds beautiful)

Originality: 6/10 (Electronic isn't anything new but it never sounded so good)

Overall: 54/60 [90%] (Check it out if your a fan of electronic)

John Mellencamp - Life, Death, Love and Freedom

It always seems to help to have T Bone Burnett as a producer. An example of that is Robert Plants & Allison Krauss. And if you want another example of great production from him it is the most recent work of John Mellencamp. Although it may not be as good as 'Raising Sand' it still is good. If you like the more up-beat John Mellencamp stuff. Than you're out of luck. It's dark and pretty darn depressing. Which is not a bad thing.

Rating: Lyrics: 28/40 (The lyrics match the production dark)

Tunefulness: 38/50 (Mellencamp still sounds pretty good. And the production is also pretty good)

Originality: 3/10 (It's dark .)

Overall: 69/100 (It's good but I was expecting a little more than that)

Nas - Nas

My most anticipated Rap/Hip-Hop release has come upon us! And it does not disappoint. It's the closest he has come to the masterpiece of his first album 'Illmatic'. The album is stuffed with political commentary and heavy beats. One of the most simple yet best tracks is 'Queens Get the Money'. It has a simple piano background and great lyrics. Another high light is Hero featuring Keri Hilson. It defiantly has one of the hottest beats on the album and some great lyrics. Nas has just stepped it up big time.

Rating: Lyrics: 37/40 (Best since 'Illmatic')

Tunefulness: 43/50 (Great production and guests)

Originality: 7/10 (How could you not give a high mark on an album that was originality titled 'N***er'

Overall: 87/100 (Great in every way)

Kardinal Offishall - Burnt (Single)

My favorite Canadian rapper has just released a single called 'Burnt'. It features Lindo P. and it is hot. It has a heavy beat and is 100x more than a street single than his first (Dangerous). It's a shame that I cannot hear the lyrics but it's still is one of my favorite songs right now.

Tunefulness: 41/50 (Great beat)

Originality: 3/10 (It's been done before but I cannot get enough of it)

Mariah Carey - I'll Be Lovin' You Long Time

After the sort of dissapointing performance of 'Bye Bye'. Mariah Carey is hungry for a hit. Her answer is a the up-beat jam of 'I'll Be Lovin' You Long Time'.I don't know if it will be a hit but you got to love the take on how (traditionally) Japanese saying of "I'll Be Lovin' You Long Time...'. Another great cut from a good album.

Rating: Lyrics: 32/40 (Clever)

Tunefulness: 42/50 (Tuneful like the rest of the album)

Originality: 4/10 (I like the play on words but other than that it doesn't have much)

Overall: 78/100 (A good cut)

Beck - Modern Guilt

One of the most consistent artists Beck always surprises me. And this album is no different. He enlisted producer Danger Mouse (Gnarls Barkley) which makes for a pretty good album. I actually think they should have put as the artist Beck/Danger Mouse because you can say that this is both of their projects in term I what I'm saying is you can hear both of their influence. One of the things they have in common is they both love 60's Psychedelic music. And you can hear that on this album. I would say that the first few tracks are some of the strongest tracks of his career. The first single 'Chemtrails' is just the tip of the iceberg. Some other good tracks are 'Gamma Ray', 'Walls', 'Orphans' and 'Modern Guilt'. Overall this album is pretty good.

Rating: Lyrics: 35/40 (Alot of spiritual talk and social commentary...very insightful)

Tunefulness: 46/50 (The production is pretty well done...Danger Mouse like always is amazing)

Originality: 8/10 (Even though you can hear that 60's vibe from this album it's not rehashing it to the credit of Danger Mouse)

Overall: 89/100 (A strong effort from a strong duo...lives up to the hype)

Is Katy Perry For Real?

You've probably heard the song a million times in your head "I kissed a girl and I liked it". But this is not the debut for this bi-curious singer. What most people don't know is she recorded a Christian album. Huh? How do you go from singing about Jesus to singing about kissing people of the same gender? I don't know about you but I am confused. So who is the REAL Katy Perry? Is she the sweet Christian girl or is she a that girl who kisses other girls to get attention?

I tend to think that she is just a record label play thing. I think under that bad girl image is a good girl who thinks Jesus is the most awesome person in the world. So people don't be fooled when you listen to her music. But who knows maybe this is really who she is. Maybe she's just starting to break out of her shell. Hell! Maybe she will make great music in the future. But for now she seems to branding herself like a sacrificial cow for the masses.
